Frustrated by a developer's legal challenges to creating residences and retail stores on 78 acres in town, the chairman of the Board of Assessors has proposed his own project. Robert Powilatis has submitted a petition signed by 55 residents to take the Old English Square property by eminent domain and build a town golf course to be funded by bonds. Powilatis wants the site to be converted into a nine-hole golf course, a clubhouse, a pro shop, and recreational and function facilities. The petition asks for Town Meeting approval May 15, according to Town Clerk Shirley Austin, but selectmen are considering postponing that meeting.
